One of the first things you should do is to claim your blog on on Technorati.com.
Technorati is a search engine for blogs. Once your blog has been verified you can enter your biography, tags (or topics) about which you blog, a photo of yourself. Technorati gives you a rank in the blogosphere. Your blog is also given an authority which is the number of links to your blog. Readers can favourite your blog.
My travel blog is currently sitting at a rank of around 160,000 with an authority of 34.
You can carry out advanced searches on Technorati to looks for blog posts about with specific tags (categories) and blogs about specific topics. This will give you an idea of what type of blogs and tags are popular.
