Better Business Blogging is written by Mark White based in London and is aimed at small and medium organistions. I like this blog because it has a European perspective and appreciates that there is not one “best way to blog for business” and that each blog must fit in with the individual business that it is designed to promote.

Blogging Expertise is owned by Sarah Lewis and is devoted to helping individuals and small business owners get the most out of blogging. There are many useful posts e.g. naming you blog and tips for writing good posts.

Blogging Coach authored by Krista Baker offers tips and advice to small businesses who want to add a blog to their marketing mix such as the search engine optimisation for blogs and who reads blogs.

Are there any blogs about business blogging that you have found useful?

Growing the blogroll

Posted on June 25th, 2007 in Marketing your blog by Karen Bryan

A blogroll is a catchy name for the list of links on your blog. One of the best ways to increase your blog’s Technorati ranking is to have links to many relevant blogs. If you search for blogs that cover a similar and/or complimentary topic to your blog then you can email the blog author to ask if they would like to exchange links.

I would advise you to only link with quality blogs that cover either them same general topics as you or quality blogs that fit in with your business/service for example if you sell wedding dresses you could link to a photographers, honeymoon travel specialist, stationers or florists.

Reasons why a blog is good for your business

Posted on June 25th, 2007 in Advantages of blogs by Karen Bryan

One of the reasons why a blog is good for your business is because it provides your website with a flow of fresh content, assuming that you are writing posts regularly. Search engines like fresh content and this helps you come higher in a natural search. The higher you come in a search the more web visitors you will receive without paying out for a massive advertising campaign.

A blog is a very low cost way of promoting your business. I use the Wordpress application which is free, you just need to integrate in into your website.  Of course all the time and effort that you spend researching, writing and marketing your blog must be taken in consideration.

What will I write about?

Posted on June 25th, 2007 in Writing posts by Karen Bryan

It can rather daunting to contemplate writing several posts a week for your blog. What you write will be closely related to your business product or service and the aim of your blog.

My blog exists to promote my website about travel in Europe. That gives me a pretty wide pool of potential material. I regulary do searches for articles related to travel in Europe, which may be newspapaper or magazine articles or other travel blogs. If I write a post I will always insert a link to the source and then write my perspective on what is contained in that story or post and ask readers for their comments. I also write about places I’ve visited, perhaps a museum, a restuarant, accommodation where I’ve stayed.

As I’ve had my travel website for almost five years I try to refer and add links to destination guides on the site. You should try to encourage and facilitate as many readers as possible to specific pages in your website so that they can find out more about your products/services and go on to make a purchase.

You have to try to do this discreetly. No readers will bother to continue reading your blog if it is a blatant vehicle for selling your product/service. The blog has to be interesting, informative and entertaining to the reader so they want to read your blog regularly but the blog also has to fulfil its potential to boost your business. It is a bit of balancing act!

Posted on June 23rd, 2007 in Marketing your blog by Karen Bryan

One of the first things you should do is to claim your blog on on Technorati.com.
Technorati is a search engine for blogs. Once your blog has been verified you can enter your biography, tags (or topics) about which you blog, a photo of yourself. Technorati gives you a rank in the blogosphere. Your blog is also given an authority which is the number of links to your blog. Readers can favourite your blog.

My travel blog is currently sitting at a rank of around 160,000 with an authority of 34.

You can carry out advanced searches on Technorati to looks for blog posts about with specific tags (categories) and blogs about specific topics. This will give you an idea of what type of blogs and tags are popular.

The aim of your blog

Posted on June 21st, 2007 in Getting started by Karen Bryan

What do you want your blog to do for you? Think about this. It’s not enough to say everyone has a blog so I need one to or I’ve heard they’re good for business so I better get blogging.

It’s often said in business that more attention should be given to retaining existing customers instead of concentrating on finding new customers. A blog could be a way of building customer loyalty. If customers read your blog and find it interesting and informative, then when they come to make a purchase hopefully your business will be their first stop. If previous customers read my blog about travel in Europe, then next time they are planning a holiday, they will visit my site and make a booking.

If a blog introduces you to a wider pool of potential customers then you should achieve an increase in sales.

It may be a good idea to write down the aims of yor blog and refer to this whenever you are making decisions about your blog to check that these decisions are likely to lead toward achieving the aims of your blog.

What a blog can and can’t do for your business

Posted on June 20th, 2007 in Getting started by Karen Bryan

I chose my title carefully using “can” rather than “will” do. While a business blog can boost your business, you shouldn’t think that if you just set up a blog it’s an easy, quick payback. You have to be prepared to spend time researching and writing entries and publicising the blog. If you think carefully about the aim and focus of your blog before you start and are prepared to write regular, relevant, interesting posts and work get your blog noticed, you should start to see an increase in turnover within several months.

If your product or service is low quality and out of date, having a blog is not going to save the day.

Should every business have a blog?

Posted on June 20th, 2007 in Aim of your blog, Writing posts by Karen Bryan

I think that a blog may not be appropriate for all business. However this question does require careful consideration, as the benefits of a blog many not be immediately apparent.

For example at present a hairdressing business may servicing a local market. You may think it hardly needs a website never mind a blog. A website could be useful to give opening times, a profile of staff members, photos of latest hairstyles. If a person moves into that area, they may do an internet search to find out about local hairdressers. Reading that salon’s website could be a positive influence in deciding to use that particular business.

A blog could give that hairdresser even more of a competitive advantage. There could be blog posts about celebrity hairstyles, testing of haircare and styling products, hopefully with comments. If that blog carried adverts for haircare and hairstyling products the revenue from these adverts could boost the business income.

Why I started my blog

Posted on June 20th, 2007 in Getting started by Karen Bryan

I started a blog for my travel business after I received an email from a student doing research about blogs in travel businesses for her disseration. I was surprised that a travel business would have a blog. I’d vaguely heard of blogs but I thought that travel blogs were online diaries for long term travellers, a way of keeping friends and family up to date with your travel adventures. I did some reading and it all extolled the benefits of business blogs.

I was very fortunate to receive that email to trigger my blast off into the blogosphere. I didn’t want you to leave it up to chance to reap the benefits of blogging for your business.

Why have a blog for your business?

Posted on June 20th, 2007 in Advantages of blogs, Aim of your blog by Karen Bryan

The simple answer is that a blog can boost your business. Many small business owners simply haven’t considered a blog or just dismissed the idea without careful consideration . They don’t think it is relevant to their business, they think it’s a passing fad or perhaps they don’t know how to get started.

I started a blog for my online travel business in October 2006. Within 6 months my site visitors and sales had doubled. However it’s not quick fix, I spent a lot of time researching and writing posts and promoting the blog.

In this blog I’ll be share my experience with you to help you boost your business.
